Finding a good digitizer

If you are new to the business and purchased digitizing software, while you are learning and ironing out the logistics of your business you’ll need to find a good digitizer that keeps production flowing. Decide what area you will specialize in, whether it is lettering, editing, digitizing and or production, eventually you will encounter someone who wants to get a logo digitized. If you are a start-up it is always good to have access to a good digitizer. This will free up time for you to focus on other aspects of the business. You’ll need to decide what type of digitizer you need. Do you want a digitizer that delivers fast service, but the quality of their work is bad? Do you want a cheep digitizer that you can never get a hold of when you need them to edit a design they created for you?  Do you want a seasoned veteran that is honest, professional and spoils you rotten?

There are all kinds of digitizers out there. You should select the one that is right for your business. It is a good idea to find a digitizer that compliments your business. If you are licensed to do brand name labels, make sure that the people you are passing copy righted materials to are of good morals and trustworthy. Ask them would it be a problem if they signed a confidentiality agreement with you to assure that if any illegal activity takes place that someone would be prosecuted.  Make sure that you always check credentials before passing on your work to anyone. Don’t be afraid to ask for references.

It is also just good business to have a back-up digitizer that you can call, if the one you use it out of town or something. You will need to have some type of backup.  Find out what kind of software your digitizer uses. They may be using the same software you use. You can request outline files that you can edit if you need to. It is good to have a digitizer that educates you on what is needed in reference to artwork, how different layouts affect sewing areas and what to ask for from your customers so you can educate your customers as well. That just makes everything go much smoother in your operation.

It is important to have a digitizer that takes responsibility for their work. Finding a digitizer that is serious about their work is priceless. When you place and order you should go over the design with your digitizer. The good digitizer will ask you:  What size is the logo?  What kind of fabric will this be sewn on? How many colors?  If there is a problem it needs to be discussed up front. If the digitizer is good, they will let you know right away if there’s going to be a problem with the artwork.

Good digitizers will path their way through a design avoiding trims as much as possible, unless otherwise requested. It is good to find a digitizer that also knows the sewing machine and how it works. You should expect smooth runs on your machine avoiding down time. Using a good digitizer will help you to be profitable. When you receive a design from a good digitizer, for the most part all you should have to do is sample it.

Last, but not least it is great to find a digitizer that has software powerful enough to do excellent small letters. Call around and find out what embroidery software is the best around then find a digitizer with that software. Good embroidery software allows your digitizer to work faster and produce excellent quality work that gives your company a good reputation for quality.
