I was wondering if someone could import this wmf file into Embird 2008
(need font engine plugin to import wmf files) and tell me if the
converted embroidery file has the blue circle and it's black outline,
or just the blue circle only? I need to figure out if I should upgrade
my Embird 2004 or if I need to upgrade and get digitizing tools with it
also... thanks!

The wmf file can be downloaded from here:

I just imported your circle.wmf into Embird Studio 8.3 and it is a blue (aqua) circle with a black outline around it. Which is the digitizing tools that I believe you are talking about...

BUT.. I imported it into Editor... and it is JUST the blue (aqua) circle. NO black outline.

Hope this helps.

One more thing to add. Studio just brings in the graphic.. Then you TRACE around it to digitize it. There are several groups on yahoo that will help with Embird.. if you need answers... I have had this program along time, but just haven't had time to learn it all... Your circle with the outline is very easy to do in Studio... Just fill the cirlcle with a fill stitch, and then click on make outline from fill stitch.. and it will make an outline around the design. You can change how wide you want the outline also...

Thanks for replying. The circle was just an easy "test image". What I'm concerned with is the ability to create, for instance, cartoon characters for embroidery. Say you have Mickey Mouse: the parts of his face and arms, etc, should be outlined with a thin black line. A single running stitch I guess... What I'm trying to figure out is there a way I can create those thin lines in my paint program and have them imported into Embird where the stitches show up correctly. But it sounds like this isn't possible.

It will probably be at my interest to upgrade from Embird 2004 to "Embird 2008 + digitizing tools" for $195, as opposed to upgrading just Embird for $45. Then I can do the digitizing directly by tracing jpegs in Embird.

Question on feature of Embird.
I understand you have to trace the raster image to create stitch, but does it automatically digitize when import a vector image?
I down load Embird for evaluation, but can not import vector because it ask for a registered font engine.
Thanks for your help.

Yes, with font engine, it will auto digitize vector images when opened in Embird/editor. However it is very buggy, and probably not the best way to digitize (although this is how I've been doing it for about a year). I'm going to upgrade and get digitizing tools soon, which will make digitizing images much easier.

Hi just joined the forum and noticed your query over the test circle into Embird.

When I open the file in Studio (8.2) it is 2 filled circles with no outline, I then deleted the second circle and using the Convert-Create outline from fill you can obtain the effect you want, as long as it is a single colour design this method will work.  If you are looking to do multi colour designs with outline you will need a very clean vector.  In your example you said Micky Mouse (not that any of use would use him, we would be  if we did) you would draw round the black outline, then draw round the colour filled areas, then using your graphics program trim the filled coloured areas, so if you moved the sections you would have an outline of black with what appeared to be white infill, and coloured areas with what appeared to be no outline (does any of this make sense , I'm afraid it's something I'm used to just doing, and it's rather hard to explain in writing), but when all put together will enable you to achieve what you require.

Vector files need to be exact for Auto-digitizing to work, unlike printing.  I use CorelDraw to create files for both printing and contour cutting on a vinyl cutter, and embroidery files in .wmf for autodigitizing.

I apologise if you're more confused.  You do really need a good Vector programme to get what you need.
