My wife is doing some volunteer work, and got a huge design (DST file) to stitch out.  After a few times, she complained that there are spots where the thread always breaks.

I opened the file with Wilcom (21D), and navigated to where the problem is.  There are about a half dozen stitches labeled "empty".  When the machine hits these, it just sits in one place putting the needle down and up.  (She owns a ZSK Sprint)

What is an empty stitch?
Is there an easy way to get rid of them?
(Edit short stitches didn't work)
It's always at the beginning of a new color.  Should I add a tie in?

Thanks,
Ken

Ken,

most probably the threadbreaks are caused due to those empty stitches. An empty stitch is a needle penetration without hoop movement. Several continous empty stitches can lead to your problem.

How did you open the dst file? Did you let the software caclculate objects? If so, I would try to delete the empty stitches with the help of the stitch list and would set the object properties of the concerned objects to make tie-in sittches. Be sure, that the object before is tied off.

If you open your sitch based file as is without letting the software calculate stitches you also can delete empty stitches in the stitch list but must insert tie-ins(resp. offs) with manual stitches in place. Don't place those manual stitches in one spot!
