11 Sep 2009 5:14 AM Alert

I'm working with DS Chancery lettering ( a built-in font) and I get jumps and trims in the worst places - like 2 trims in the middle of ONE letter!  This is awful!

Also, how do I get a nearest point connection?  This is a minor thing, but the letter split into pieces is ridiculous.

Thanks,

Peachy

Personally, I haven't seen that problem, but try this:
- go to Lettering Properties
- open the "Set Stitch Sequence" panel in the Lettering properties window.
- there's an option "Stitch Methods: Join". Pick "Closest Join".

That should get rid of most of the trims.

Another thing you can try is reducing the letter spacing. The software will try to trim any "connectors" that are longer than 2mm, even if the letter spacing is lower.

Thanks so much for your reply.

I have Deco Studio 1.5e - it doesn't have any options under "Set Stitch Sequence" like you describe.  The only choices listed are "start at right", "start at left" and "start at center" with 2 choices below that last option.

As for spacing, I had moved the letters as close together as looked appealing.

Before I moved the letters, I had chosen the "Break Apart" option, and each letter was broken apart and had trims and jumps within each letter.  The name I was stitching had 15 letters in all and the back is visible, so it wasn't a good thing at all.

Thanks again for trying to help.

You're welcome, Peachy. Ok, now I understand!

I suggest to NOT use Break Apart on Lettering, it's so much easier to work with as a whole object.

You do not need to break apart lettering objects to move/reshape individual letters. Just create the Lettering object, select the object (as a whole) and press "H" (reshape). You can select and move individual letters by dragging the "diamond" shapes in the middle of each letter, without having to break it apart.

By keeping the lettering object as a whole lettering object, the software automatically sequences the letters of most fonts as "Closest Join" so minimizes trims (even if your DecoStudio doesn't let you choose "Closest Join" - most fonts default to that anyway, so don't worry). Keeping your object whole also keeps all the lettering properties like baseline, etc.

Thanks so much for that reminder.  I'm a newbie (obviously) and I forgot about the reshape tool on letters.
