08 Jan 2009 5:08 AM Alert

I have a few questions about CorelDraw in Wilcom Embroidery Studio 1.5e.

1.       Why can’t I save a file from CorelDraw within Wilcom in Corel’s native .cdr format?

2.       Why are there missing Workspace Customization features?

3.       Why does Wilcom lock-up when I switch to Graphic Mode if CorelDraw has a custom Workspace?

4.       Why is CorelDraw limited if I use it from within Wilcom, but full-featured if I launch it as a separate process?

5.       Why is my page displayed off-center and my graphics off the page when I switch to Graphic Mode?

6.       Why does the program crash every time I try to move a color palette (if I have more than 2 open) in Graphic Mode?

Update to my previous post.

Corel responded quickly to the email I sent tech support. Wilcom has not responed yet except to say someone will be with me shortly.

Here is Corel's response and below that is my further comments.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Dear Mr/ Ms Olivio,

Thank you very much for your e-mail.

1. Because they are two separate programs which support different file types.
The two programs are manufactured by two different companies.
2. This depends on your settings.
You may want to reset the program to factory defaults.
Answer Title: Resetting Application Defaults in CorelDRAW® and PHOTO-PAINT® Running on Windows®
Answer Link: http://corel.custhelp.com/cgi-bin/corel.cfg/php/enduser/std_adp.php?p_faqid=753793&p_created=1069297572
3. Another program must be conflicting with Wilcom itself.
We recommend that you consult with Wilcom itself for technical support on the Wilcom software.
http://www.wilcom.com.au/SUPPORT.aspx
4. Because the two has to work in conjunction and certain CorelDraw feature may have to be disabled for seamless connectivity of the two programs.
5. It is possible that the document you created may be off-centered with respect to the graphic's mode coordinates.
6. Kindly specify which of the two programs crash during this procedure.

Please do not hesitate to contact us for any further questions.

Kind regards,
Corel Customer Support

My respone:
Thank you for your responses.

Please note that I am a CorelDraw Beta Tester since version 7. I know how to operate the program. Also, the company I work for has 6 installations of Wilcom ES 1.5e. I fought long and hard to get the comapny to embrace CorelDraw as the better choice to Illustrator and we've had nothing but problems. Please address this issue completely.

I'd like to revisit the questions above...

1. I understand that Wilcom and CorelDraw are created by 2 different companies. But my question is; Why has the ability to save a CorelDraw .cdr file been removed from the Corel side (Graphic Mode) of Wilcom. I don't expect Wilcom to be able to save a .cdr file, but CorelDraw should absolutely be able to save a .cdr file. I'm sorry, but it makes no sense to remove this function from the Corel side. For example: I create a design in Wilcom that uses an applique, I open the applique vector on the CorelDraw side of Wilcom (Graphic Mode), I want to cut the applique from my laser workstation which only has CorelDraw on it. How do I get the file open on my Laser workstation? I can't...

2, 3 & 4. I have reset both applications to the factory settings and uninstalled and reinstalled, but many of the Workspace Customization features are simply not there. And if I open CorelDraw by itself (outside of Wilcom) all the Customization features are there. Unfortunately, if I customize and save a new Workspace in CorelDraw running outside of Wilcom, when I do open Wilcom and try to switch to Graphic Mode the program hangs. How am I suposed to work like this?

5. No further comment.

6. I've been able to determine that moving any color palette will crash CorelDraw (from within Wilcom) 100% of the time. It does not require that more than 1 palette be open as I previously reported. It will crash instantly if you try to move any palette. Furthermore, if you cancel the CARM, the Wilcom side remains open and useable, but if you go back into the Graphic Mode and move a palette it will crash again and again. If you try it repeatedly, it will close every toolbar and docker in Wilcom and the workspce must be rebuilt from scratch.

Hopefully a Hot-Fix is in the works as we speak.

We have had the same issues. We have clients that want somthing embroidered and then to use the same graphic on other items - sublimated, laser engraved etc.

Also, I had to buy Corel Draw X3 and now X4 and open it along with the Deco Studio so that I could save a file in cdr and have full capabilities.

That was only after a lot of wiggling with saving files in an Exchange Server format and retrieving them in my Corel Draw X3/X4.

I also have spoken to Wilcom and they are intersted in getting this problem sorted out as they are saying that we have fully functioning Corel Draw X3 and now X4 and we should not have to do what I have done.

It is frustrating and time consuming.

Let's hope a resolution to this problem is forthcoming.

BTW does anyone know if we will get the free updates for the Corel Draw X4?  The new updates jsut got released Jan 15?

Mijen,

1. Hopefully, you did not go out and buy CorelDraw X4 and X3. The X4 that is included with Wilcom ES 1.5 and Wilcom DecoStudio can be run independently of Wilcom and you will have all the features available. You will have to do a custom install to get Font Navigator installed. For some reason it does not install with the standard installation.

2. The CorelDraw patches can be applied to the CorelDraw that comes with Wilcom.

for your question:

Corel’s native .cdr format?

You can use the 'Export As...' and save it as a "CMX - Corel Presentation Exchange (*.cmx)" and this will keep the file as if it was a .cdr.

missing Workspace Customization features (question 2,3 & 4)

You can customize your work space and ad macro etc...  Try opening CorelDraw and then select the Wilcom Workspace form the Tool>Option>Workspace, make any changes (add Macro etc...) and then save the work space, you will see the new work space when you go to the Graphic Mode

Why is my page displayed off-center

You can change the center (Ruler).  Up in the Right coner of the ruler click and drag to where you want the center of your ruler to be on your page (0,0).

Why does the program crash every time I try to move a color palette (if I have more than 2 open) in Graphic Mode?

I don't have this problem so I can't help you with this. I have use 3 color palettes and some time more.
